At the big debate in the Legislature last week, Senator Feinstein made a good point. California voted to fund Fetus Stem Cell research, even thought the Federal Government will not. Sounded good to a lot of people – but it is not working. Apparently rulings were cast that say NOTHING that is federally funded can be used in the research. Not the buildings, Equipment, she made comment – not even ink pens. This has created an accounting nightmare – because it is very difficult to determine which dollar is federal vs. state, and whether owned equipment (desks, chairs, $30,000 microscopes, test tubes, etc.) were funded in some part by federal dollars.
So, something has to be done, because the money voted to be used for research – is being used to buy equipment and buildings instead….so not much money is left for research.
This a good point – and it also shows how little the California Legislature, who set this vote up, understood what they were doing.
Of course the question I had then, and now is – If Biotech Companies are making RECORD PROFITS (and they are) – why do we need to fund their research? If they are the ones who will make the profits from the research, why don’t they pay for the research – why is the government getting involved at all??
And doesn’t that funding, which was heavily backed by the Democrats – which ends up helping the BIG BUSINESS BIOTECH FIRMS – fly in the face of their principal of being for the Little Guy, and specifically NOT the Big Guys???
But at any rate – being the vote was as it was – Senator Feinstein did make a good point….
Pete
